A Math and the JC Route

Here’s the honest truth about JC: A Math is not shown as a universal MOE-wide cut-off on the general A-Level overview page, but individual JCs do publish their own H2 Mathematics entry criteria. For example, National JC’s published indicative cut-off for H2 Mathematics is “B4 in O-Level Additional Mathematics; or A2 in O-Level Mathematics,” and the college strongly recommends H1 Mathematics for students who did not offer O-Level Additional Mathematics.

This is why treating it as optional can be a costly mistake. Many JCs expect students taking H2 Mathematics to come in with strong prior mathematical preparation, often through O-Level Additional Mathematics or a very strong O-Level Mathematics grade. H2 Mathematics moves much faster than O-Level Math and covers advanced topics such as complex numbers, vectors, and first-order differential equations, along with calculus techniques well beyond A Math scope, though the exact sequence depends on the JC.

Students without solid A Math skills often pick H1 Mathematics instead. This feels like the safe choice at the time. But it narrows your options later. H1 Mathematics can limit access to many engineering, computing, and data science programmes, especially at NUS and NTU, where many of these courses require H2 Mathematics. 

However, this doesn’t apply as broadly to all finance or business-related courses. And while Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)’s A-Level admissions page only requires good passes in three H2 content-based subjects overall (rather than naming H2 Mathematics as a formal prerequisite), MOE’s own SUTD profile notes that the majority of admitted students have taken H2 Mathematics, so in practice it remains the expected pathway. Switching back to H2 mid-JC is rarely allowed once a student falls behind.

The stakes are higher now too. From Academic Year (AY) 2026, the maximum University Admission Score (UAS) is 70 points, based on a student’s 3 H2 content-based subjects plus H1 General Paper. H1 Mother Tongue and a 4th content-based subject are only rebased if they improve the final UAS. The 4th content-based subject is included only if it improves the final UAS, and Project Work is now treated as Pass/Fail for university admission.

So your child’s maths foundation at Secondary 4 really does shape their future UAS. We’ve watched this play out with our own JC students. Those with strong A Math backgrounds settle into H2 Maths within a term or two. Those without it spend most of JC1 just trying to catch up.

However, it only improves a student’s aggregate if that grade helps more than the other eligible subjects, and Elementary Mathematics is also a relevant subject for many STEM aggregate types.
